Willimantic became known as “Thread City” because American Thread Company, the largest employer in the state at one time, was once located on the banks of Willimantic River.

The Willimantic Whitewater Partnership has encouraged the growth of the fish population, enhanced the potential for the river's recreational use and created an urban waterfront park.

The more than 17,000 residents of Willimantic care deeply about the town's image and the availability of community-oriented events. Every third Thursday, between the months of May and September, Willimantic Renaissance, Inc. hosts the 3rd Thursday Street Fest. There are musical and theatrical entertainers, more than 100 crafters and vendors, micro-brews, and street performers.

Prospect Hill Historic District is another remarkable feature of Willimantic. The 993 historic buildings, mostly of Victorian architecture, make up one of the state's largest historical districts.
