The charming hamlet of Thornwood, New York is located within the town of Mount Pleasant on the westernmost side of Westchester County.
Streets with names such as Poe, Byron, and Keats are lined with majestic willow, spruce, and elm trees. Passersby take time out to stop and chat with each other and are eager to get to know their neighbors. This friendly, small town atmosphere is one characteristic that has drawn more than 4,000 residents to Thornwood. Although it bears no resemblance to crowded city blocks where neighbors may pass each other for years without knowing one another's name, the city is an easy one-hour commute via the Metro-North Railroad Hawthorne Station.
Thornwood offers a variety of activities, including the seven-acre James M. Carroll Park which offers a softball and baseball field and a fishing pond that is used as a skating rink during the winter months. The Mount Pleasant Town Pool is also available to residents on a fee basis. The land for the 12-acre pool complex was donated by IBM.
Children in Thornwood attend the Mount Pleasant Central School District. The district enrolls nearly 2,000 students and offers a variety of advanced placement courses.
Once someone settles in Thornwood, it's rare that they leave. The scenic tree-lined streets, friendly atmosphere and convenience to Manhattan are key factors in Thornwood's appeal.
